I’m trying a little different format for this month’s “What I’ve Been Listening To” playlist for January. I know I usually publish a post with a streaming music playlist but I want to try doing the same thing with video. Let me know what you think!
Summary of the January Playlist
This month was a busy month for listening to music. I drove across country, from upstate New York to Phoenix, after the holidays so there was a bunch of time to listen to stuff during that time but there were also a lot of great music released in January too. One album that was released this month was from Punch Brothers called The Phosphorescent Blues and one of my favorite tracks is called “My Oh My.” Phosphorescent Blues is a bit more laid back from their previous albums. There’re are not nearly as many face melting solos, the focus seems to be more on the song and the composition of the song itself.
The second song of the January playlist is “My Silver Lining” by First Aid Kit. A friend had sent me a link to a video of First Aid Kit and it renewed my interest in them and I went back and listened to their album from last year called Stay Gold.
The third song of the playlist I got from getting stuck in the traffic jams around Phoenix during Super Bowl weekend. I figured one of the best songs to play in such a situation was “Roadhouse Blues” by The Doors. Turns out, it was the perfect song and I had to crank up the volume.
The forth and fifth songs of the playlist come from new vinyl that were given to me as gifts for the holidays. I got a Charley Patton record and a Son House record and they sound amazing on my turntable so they have been spinning quite a bit. Songs on the playlist are “Spoonful Blues” by Charley Patton and “Death Letter Blues” by Son House.
The final three songs of the January playlist were Jazz tunes starting with Frank Sinatra and Count Basie’s “Pennies from Heaven.” Following that, I had a Charles Mingus moment on the radio so I went back and listened to the entire New Tijuana Moods album. Then to finish up the playlist, I’m featuring “Enigma” by Miles Davis. This was another gift from the holidays and it sounds just as good on my record player as the two blues records.
Thanks for checking out the January playlist! Let me know what you think about this format in the comments here or on YouTube.
