Benjamin Gunn
Here I come a callin not a gentleman at all
Still I go a callin down to one-ninety one
A rain it gently pattered on the furrow of my brow
With outstretched hand I ran into Benjamin Gunn
“You will find your treasure, boy,” say he with a grin.
“But always know where you are going and donʼt forget where you begun”
He may not carry all the wits that he once had
But he knows something of treasure and of being alone
He had shook my hand and he turned off in the night
Then I saw my treasure which glimmered more than gold
Twas greater than Flattʼs Find or that any X could mark
This treasure was beautiful, this treasure was bold
One year passed, I saw Gunn walking in the snow
Towards me he came with that grin heʼd always show
He said “start at the beginning boy I know you recall well”
So I spoke to him like everyone who has an ear to tell
Raise up your ears as I speak of the commandeer.
Commandeer
Surprise, surprise. Thinking I was happily reserved.
Knowing really nothing and being so absurd
For you took my eyes with your lovely words.
On that premiere summer night.
First and paramount you got my sight
You donʼt need to tell me what I found, shaman mirror.
Take me over love, youʼre the commandeer.
Sub rosa gems and quirks waiting to be explored
And both of us have a yearning to always learn a little more
As we barter like pirates while the tide is out on the shore
Waiting to be taken to another world
Where our love will be unfurled
And I don’t know how this was ceded to me but I grovel here.
Take me over love, youʼre the commandeer.
Take me in your arms, love
Weʼll travel to the right, sharing inspiration
Laying in your stardust knowing that its where I belong
Iʼm gonna take it to the village and take it to the towns
Over a dram of rum, Iʼll tell the Elliott’s how I was found
And tell them to keep their ears wide as they travel round
For our love story will go far
Mythologized but kept on par
With every thought of you, my face fills between the ears
Take me over love, youʼre the commandeer
Interlude
She pulls me towards a freedom haze
A glance gives a feel of opiates
There are no signs or locks on gates
We can go anywhere
Sight on the Northern Star
Weʼre finding our own way,
the map that we had is either in ashes or char
Weʼll make it on ok
With our sight on the northern star
The seas are sure to be rough
The land will be rocky and tough
A hand out of blind manʼs bluff
Supported by the strength of our love
Pass around the rum now
Celebrate life thatʼs from around all shores
At sun up weʼll turn ʻround
To see the ripples from our mystical course
The seas are sure to be rough
The land will be rocky and tough
A hand out of blind manʼs bluff
Supported by the strength of our love
Reverie Pilgrims
We came from the old world junior
Through the ghost towns on the new gold rush
No matter how long you let it pursue ya
You always submit to the love
When youʼre shaken and colored sea green
Or walking a weak plank with nothing but trust
Maybe ready to sleep, perchance dream?
And say, “ay thereʼs the rub!”
Hey I wanna spend the days dreaming with you
Hey I wanna spend the days dreaming with you
Yeah we landed here together
Weʼre only looking forward so we rigged the ship to blow
And you always keep the fire burning
You keep the light to make it all explode
And you still take me over love
Youʼre the commandeer
Here we are like decker giants
Barking at the ones who own the land
Amused by watching us pitch tent
But the laughs come softer as they watch us grow
Now the reverie pilgrims brought worlds
And dreams swinging through billboard skeletons
And what of when comes high water?
Weʼll grab the first floating door and follow the flow
Hey I wanna spend the days dreaming with you
Hey I wanna spend the days dreaming with you
Yeah it looks like weʼre fair distance
Letʼs stay here tonight and watch the fireflies glow
Iʼll get that fire burning
And you start the great fireworks show
And you still take me over love
Youʼre the commandeer
We came from the old world junior
Through the ghost towns on the new gold rush
No matter how long you let it pursue ya
You always submit to the love
And you still take me over love
You’re the commandeer!
