How To Waterproof a Leather Hat

I don’t spend all my time drinking wine and listening/making music (even though that would be awesome and a great way to live life). I also love my hats and my boots and because I love them so much I take the time to properly care for them. If you feel the same way, maybe you’d enjoy this little video I made about how to waterproof a leather hat. Or at least how I do it anyways.

Water can ruin almost everything and leather is certainly no exception. When water soaks into untreated leather, it can lead to the leather changing shape and even rotting. This is why it’s vital to properly weatherproof and waterproof a leather hat so that it can last as long as possible. Maybe even for your entire life.

As you’ll notice in the video, the main product I use on my hat and on some of my boots is the Snow-Proof and Weatherproofing product. It’s excellent at protecting and revitalizing leather that can be purchased almost everywhere and it’s particularly good at making water bead up and fall right off whatever it’s applied to.

Snow Proof and Weatherproofing

The trick is to take a rag, dip it in the weatherproofing product and apply it to the hat in a circular motion until it is evenly distributed across the entire hat. It’s important to note that this product should not be used on lighter color leathers since it will darken the color. If you don’t mind a darker color then by all means use this product. Also, this product will complete change suede leathers so definitely don’t use this product on suede.

Once you’ve applied an even amount of weatherproofing product to the hat, let it sit so the leather soaks in the product a bit and you’ll notice that water will bead and fall right off the hat instead of being soaked up by the leather. This is exactly what you want and it will keep your hat looking great and functioning in bad weather conditions.
